April 2026 Kansas City Hail Storms: A Record-Breaking Season

April 2026 will be remembered as the most violent severe weather month in Kansas City history. Four major hail events tore through the metro in just 15 days, culminating in an apple-sized hail strike on Olathe, Overland Park, and Lenexa on April 26. If your vehicle was caught in any of these storms, this is your complete guide to inspection, insurance, and repair.

Kansas City's Most Active Severe Weather Season Ever

Kansas City has recorded 244 combined severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings through April 27, 2026 — shattering all previous records by 54 alerts. This is the most active severe weather season ever recorded for the KC metro, and peak season (May and June) has not even begun.

As KCTV5 Chief Meteorologist Luke Dorris put it: "If you just look at the number of storms that have gone strong enough to be severe, this season is unparalleled to this date so far. And the thing is, we still have a long way to go."

Four major hail events struck the Kansas City metro in just 15 days, leaving thousands of vehicles with dent damage across Johnson County KS, Jackson County MO, Miami County KS, and Cass County MO. Body shops are already booked out for months. Insurance carriers have opened catastrophe (CAT) response teams. And homeowners are still cleaning up shattered glass and splintered siding from the worst of it.

Timeline: Every April 2026 Hail Storm in Kansas City

April 13 — Tornadoes and Half-Dollar Hail

The month opened with a violent surge of severe weather. Tornadoes touched down in Ottawa, Kansas (Franklin County), and as the storm system moved east into the metro it dropped half-dollar-sized hail (1.25 inches) across a wide swath of southern Johnson County. More than 12,000 Evergy customers lost power in east-central Kansas as transmission lines were knocked down by wind and hail.

Areas affected: Ottawa (66067), Spring Hill (66083), and southern Johnson County neighborhoods.

April 15 — Egg-Sized Hail, State of Emergency Declared

Just 48 hours later, a second wave of severe storms slammed Miami County with egg-sized hail (2+ inches). The damage was severe enough that Paola (66071) and Osawatomie (66064) declared a state of emergency after extensive damage to homes, businesses, and vehicles. Windows were shattered by direct hail impact. Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued across Johnson County KS and Jackson County MO.

Areas affected: Paola, Osawatomie, Louisburg (66053), southern Olathe, southern Overland Park.

April 17 — Golf Ball Hail and Tornado in Raymore

Two days after the Miami County emergency, another supercell tracked across the southern KC metro on the Missouri side. Golf ball-sized hail (1.75 inches) pounded neighborhoods, and a confirmed tornado was reported over Raymore (64083). Trees were uprooted, vehicles were damaged in driveways and parking lots, and several outbuildings were destroyed.

Areas affected: Lee's Summit (64063, 64064, 64081, 64082, 64086), Raymore (64083), Grandview (64030), Belton (64012), Pleasant Hill (64080), Greenwood (64034).

April 26-27 — Apple-Sized Hail Directly Hits Olathe, Overland Park, Lenexa

The worst storm of the month — and arguably the worst single hail event in years — struck on Sunday afternoon, April 26. Apple-sized hail (2.50 inches), the largest of the season, fell directly on the heart of Storm Shield's core service area. Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued specifically for Olathe, Overland Park, and Lenexa. Wind gusts reached 70 mph, and 322 power outages were reported in Johnson County alone as transformers blew and lines came down.

On Monday morning, April 27, tornado sirens woke residents as a follow-up round of storms rolled through. More hail was filmed in Overland Park, and flash flooding shut down roads across the metro, stranding morning commuters. More than 10 structures in Miami County were damaged or destroyed on top of the April 15 damage that was already being assessed.

Areas affected: Olathe (66061, 66062), Overland Park (66204, 66210, 66212, 66221, 66223), Lenexa (66215, 66219), Shawnee (66203, 66216, 66217, 66218), Kansas City KS, Kansas City MO.

How to Check Your Car for Hail Damage After These Storms

Hail damage is often deceptive. A car that looks fine in your driveway may have dozens of small dents an insurance adjuster will catch in seconds. Here's how to do a thorough self-inspection before your professional estimate:

  • Check the hood, roof, and trunk lid first. These horizontal surfaces take the most hits from falling hail and are where damage is most concentrated.
  • Inspect in diffused light — overcast days, dawn, or dusk — when dents cast subtle shadows. Direct midday sunlight tends to hide dents.
  • Run your hand slowly across each panel. Many dents from quarter-size and golf-ball hail can be felt before they can be seen, especially on lighter colors.
  • Look at the side panels, fenders, and quarter panels. Wind-driven hail like the April 26 storm hits vertical surfaces too, not just the roof.
  • Check for cracked, chipped, or flaking paint around dent edges. This indicates whether the damage is PDR-repairable or whether that specific panel will need conventional repair.
  • Photograph everything from multiple angles. Place a coin or ruler next to dents for scale. Note the date and which storm caused the damage.
  • Even if damage looks minor, get a professional PDR estimate. Insurance adjusters routinely find 3-5x more dents than vehicle owners spot on their own — and every dent counts toward the total payout.

Filing Your Hail Damage Insurance Claim: Step-by-Step

Filing a claim correctly the first time saves weeks of back-and-forth. Here's exactly how to do it after the April storms:

  • Step 1 — Document the damage with dated photos. Take close-ups and wide shots, multiple angles per panel, in good lighting.
  • Step 2 — Identify the storm date that caused the damage (April 13, 15, 17, or 26-27). Your insurer will tie the claim to a specific weather event.
  • Step 3 — Call your insurance company and confirm your comprehensive coverage and deductible amount.
  • Step 4 — Request a catastrophe (CAT) claim number if available. Insurers open CAT teams after major storms and process these claims significantly faster than standard claims.
  • Step 5 — Get a repair estimate from a PDR specialist — not just the insurer's preferred body shop. PDR is the insurance-preferred method for hail damage because it preserves the factory paint and costs less.
  • Step 6 — Do NOT accept a total-loss offer without getting a PDR estimate first. A PDR shop may be able to save your car for a fraction of the replacement cost.
  • Step 7 — Do NOT wait. Most policies have time limits on filing claims after a weather event, and CAT team capacity is first-come, first-served.

Why PDR Is the Smart Choice for April 2026 Hail Damage

After a storm season this severe, every body shop in the metro will be backed up for months. Paintless dent repair (PDR) is faster, cheaper, and produces a better result for hail damage:

  • Preserves your factory paint — no sanding, no body filler, no repainting. Your car keeps its original finish and resale value.
  • 30-50% less per panel than conventional body shop repair.
  • 1-3 days instead of 1-3+ weeks at a body shop.
  • Insurance companies prefer PDR — it's cheaper, faster, and produces better results for hail damage.
  • $0 out-of-pocket for most customers with comprehensive coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions After the April 2026 Storms

Q: How long do I have to file a hail damage claim after the April 2026 storms? A: Most insurance policies allow 1-2 years to file, but filing sooner means faster processing. After a major storm event like April 2026, insurers open CAT teams that process claims more quickly — file now to take advantage of this.

Q: Will my insurance rates go up if I file a hail claim? A: Hail claims are classified as "acts of nature" (comprehensive claims), not at-fault incidents. Most insurers do not raise rates for comprehensive claims, though policies vary. Check with your carrier.

Q: My car was hit by multiple storms in April. Do I file one claim or multiple? A: If damage accumulated across storms, one comprehensive claim typically covers all the damage. Your PDR technician can document the total damage for the adjuster.

Q: Can PDR fix damage from 2.50-inch (apple-sized) hail? A: In most cases, yes. PDR can repair dents from even large hail as long as the paint is not cracked or the metal is not stretched. We assess each vehicle individually — our free estimate will tell you exactly what's repairable with PDR.

Q: How long will the repair take? A: Most hail repairs are completed in 1-3 days with PDR. Severe damage from the larger April storms may take 3-5 days. We'll give you a precise timeline at your estimate.

Q: I live in Lee's Summit / Raymore / Grandview — do you service my area? A: Yes. We serve the entire KC metro including Lee's Summit, Raymore, Grandview, Belton, Pleasant Hill, and all surrounding areas. Free pickup and delivery is available.

Q: What if the body shop says my car is totaled? A: Get a second opinion from a PDR specialist before accepting a total-loss offer. PDR can often save vehicles that body shops would total because PDR costs significantly less. We've saved many cars from being totaled.
